3 Tips That Will Make Your Resolutions Stick

3 Tips That Will Make Your Resolutions Stick

Resolutions have really good intentions. But unfortunately, the majority of them end up being broken. There are a few reasons why this happens.

The first is that many resolutions are made with not enough thought around the WHY. Why are you making the resolution to go to the gym or wake up at 6am everyday? If you have your WHY, then it’s so much powerful and easier to stick to your resolution.

The second is making too many resolutions at once. At its core, a resolution is a habit. And any new habit takes time to form. In fact, a lot of research has shown that it takes 21 days to build and solidify a new habit, which is why a lot of programs for meditation or personal growth usually take 21 days.

The third is the lack of planning. How are you going to achieve these resolutions? Do you need support? If so, what time of support - a coach, an accountability partner, a therapist, a class?

Therefore, when you make resolutions, consider these 3 tips so that you can set yourself up for resolution success:

  1. Figure out your why. This will give you the strength in the moments when you feel like giving up.

  2. Quality over Quantity - choose up to 6 resolutions max instead of an overwhelming list. I like 6 because it gives me 2 months to really adopt a resolution into my life, leaving room for some unforeseen bumps and turns along the way.

  3. Have a plan on how you will tackle each resolution. Have a journal where you can track your progress, celebrate your wins, and log any challenges so that you can make the changes necessary to adopt your resolution.

  4. BONUS tip: Adopt a new idea for yourself that is aligned with the resolution you committed to. For example, if working out 4 times a week is your resolution, then think of yourself as the type of person who works out 4 times a week. This person is fit, is disciplined, plans out what their workouts will be, what time of day their workouts will be and does not miss workouts. Take this on as a new layer of your identity and in no time, working out won’t just be something you do, it will be something that’s a part of you. I got this tip from the book Atomic Habits.
